Potty Training 101

Okay friends. We have decided to move beyond diapers and would like some wisdom from you. Any tips of what did/didn't work for you? Or just plain old funny stories?

rewards, make it something really big in the beginning and then you can slowly taper off and even move to sticker charts but for the first I'd say five times make it big!! we gave Isaac monster trucks for the first like 5-10 times and then we moved on to hotwheels cars, and then sticker charts. we kept the rewards going for a few months to encourage him. we also let him run around naked the first few days and even set up his little table in the bathroom in front of the toilet so he could sit and play!!! good luck. we didn't think it was that hard. it honestly only took a week to get past the accidents and then we would have a few random ones occasionally after that. but never any poop!!!

Ummm...potty training your first kid SUCKS! You just really need to make sure that YOU are ready to commit to it. It takes a lot of patience. I'm all for all-day-nakey-days. Just strip her bottom half and give her a special juice that she doesn't get often, and then set the timer for like 15 mins and then every 15-30 mins go sit on the potty. That's what we did for Meg. And then rewards are great. Something that she doesn't get often. Good luck!

Nice...I think Katelyn will love the nakey days. I think we're going to give her a bit more time adjusting to CA but maybe in August start it. We've bought a little potty seat for visuals..I think she is definately ready for pullups though.

If she likes to be clean, the feel and learn pull-ups have worked well for my three. They don't like feeling the mess. And after that special character panties that they choose that have to be kept clean. The feel and learn pull ups have also helped accidents at night for mine.

Well if you remember my experience with Madison...it was a nightmare. It took her until she was 3 1/2 to finally poop on the potty. But once she did we didn't have to use pull-ups or diapers for naps or anything, so that was nice. But, it drove me crazy. The pediatrician made a strong emphasis that you need to make sure your child is ready and that "most" kids are ready closer to the age of three. but i do know a few kids that were successful much younger. anyway...i haven't even pushed brooklin. i figured she'd let me know when she's ready. she has gone both pee and poop on her little potty, but i don't force her. the biggest thing i learned was to not allow it to be a power struggle between the two of you. give your little one the power to make the choice. encouragement and PATIENCE are the key. one friend recently told me that she set the timer for a certain amount of time and then every time it went off, it was time to sit on the potty. she did it for a few days and it seemed to work for her kids, but she did mention someone else who did the same thing and it didn't work...so...to sum it all up. i don't think there's a perfect way to potty train. all i have to add is GOOD LUCK. i'm sure katelyn is a little angel and won't give you any trouble :-)

I think it makes all the diffrence in the world to make sure the child is READY. If they aren't you will drive yourself crazy. We let Logan do it on his own time and it was so easy! We are doing the same with Cambree, but she is a little bit more lazy! Good luck!

I agree with nakey days and lots of special juice. That way they have to pee all day and get lots of practice. We had a potty party with a cake and balloons. We watched Elmos potty time and read potty books. Try to make it as positive as possible...even though inside you want to scream :) I am dreading potty training David. Good Luck!

we're trying with dd too...just pooping...we watch for the grunt and she's starting to make a little motion to tell us...we've had 2 in a row now...last night and about a half hour ago. good luck!!

It's so hard to tell if she's ready. She's definately gone on strike from the diapers (she told me this morning that diapers are for Sarah not Katelyn...) and only likes to sit on the BIG girl potty (doesn't like the princess potty-go figure). We'll see...

I totally agree with the other advice-- rewards and being ready--gumballs worked for us, it will be putting you through heck if the child isn't ready...I tried off and on from age 2 and just one day (about 3rd birthday) they decided to be "big". The key is that they have to want to. Good luck!

wow, what a lot of comments! My two cents is to just pump her full of gaterade/juice and let her run around naked. And get your camera ready for the first time she has an accident without pants on, because the look on kids' faces when they look at the "water" running down their legs and realizing they are doing it themselves is priceless! (but totally potty train while you're in an apt and not your own house yet) :)

Loved the post. When we finally get to Oregon, that is one thing on the to-do list and really make it available. Thanks for all the tips from everyone. I liked it. Good luck. Have fun in CA..

Great idea Stacey! I know Carly's not ready yet and this definitely confirms that. What I want to know is how do you let your child run around naked? I cringe at the idea that she would go on the carpet or furniture. Is it just a chance you have to take?

I say, a big stash of chocolate is essential (to get you through), and a large quantity of Lysol disinfectant spray. And also, maybe hang something fun in the bathroom, because you're going to be spending lots of time there! Also, flushable wipes are kind of a must for me. How do you know Liz? Thanks for dropping by, and good luck with the potty training!
